Intermediate Level Engineering Geologist/Geo-Technical Engineers


Due to a healthy forward looking workload and continued team growth we are looking for ambitious and motivated intermediate level engineers to join our Edinburgh Geotechnical and Environmental team.


Successful candidates will have opportunities to develop and grow their experience within a multi-disciplinary company with a large workload of Transportation projects as well as industrial, commercial and residential developments.  Successful candidates will be enthusiastic, confident and self-motivated with excellent verbal and written communication ability and time management skills.  The responsibilities of a successful candidate will include the following:

  • Scoping, design and site supervision of Intrusive Ground investigations including knowledge of soil and rock logging standards, intrusive ground investigation techniques, specification of appropriate soil and groundwater sampling methods and scheduling of both geotechnical and environmental laboratory testing;
  • Preparation of Ground models based on a good understanding of geology; in particular glacial depositional environments
  • Report writing including analysis of the following geotechnical issues in accordance with Eurocodes:
    • Slope stability;
    • Foundations;
    • Earthworks;
    • Soil & Rock engineering;
    • Ground improvement;
    • Ground movement and settlement/subsidence;
  • Site visits and foundation inspections for infrastructure projects;
  • Mapping of rock discontinuities;
  • Preparation of risk assessments;
  • Managing and mentoring of junior staff

Candidates will have the opportunity to grow and further develop their understanding of the above disciplines and shall be expected to fulfil the above responsibilities with support and mentoring from senior members of staff. Site supervision of ongoing ground investigations will be required and this will entail periods away from home typically ranging from 10 weeks to 14 weeks and some weekend working.

Candidates would be expected to be proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.  Knowledge of AutoCAD, Slope stability software (SLIDE), Rock stability software (DIPS) and PLAXIS is preferred though not essential.


A good degree in Earth Sciences, Geology or Civil Engineering is required.  An MSc in Geotechnics or Engineering Geology or a related subject would be beneficial but is not essential. Four to six years’ post graduate experience is required. Experience of ground investigations and geotechnical reporting for Highway schemes is desirable.

Candidates are expected to be working towards Chartered status and support will be provided.

A clean driving licence is required.
