Geotechnical & Environmental Engineering : Ness Farm & Tullos Hill Landfill

LOCATION: Aberdeen
CLIENT: SITA UK Ltd & Aberdeen City Council
STATUS: Ongoing
COST: £16m

The Ness Farm landfill, located south of Aberdeen City Centre, is owned by Aberdeen City Council and is currently managed by SITA (UK) Ltd. As the historic attenuate and disperse landfill areas on this site were not formally restored on closure, between 1970 and 2001, it is the Council’s aim to fully restore the land, providing a wildlife and recreational area for future generations. The main geotechnical and environmental issues to be accommodated for as part of the restoration include reducing the environmental impacts by leachate on adjacent property and controlled waters, management of landfill gas and surface water runoff, and maintaining the stability of the landfill cap on steep slopes around the site perimeter.

Fairhurst was appointed as environmental engineer by SITA UK to advise on environmental issues, compile and implement an Environmental Monitoring Plan and design and tender restoration works.
