Geotechnical & Environmental Engineering : Arcow Quarry

LOCATION: Yorkshire Dales National Park
CLIENT: Tarmac Northern
STATUS: Ongoing
COST: £1.5m

Arcow Quarry is situated within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  The owners of the quarry, Tarmac Northern, engaged Fairhurst to design and implement a scheme to allow the final restoration of the site following cessation of extraction.  Specialist skills have been required due to the major instability evident in the quarry, which had been threatening to affect nationally important limestone pavement features outwith the boundary of the quarry due to mass slope movement.

Fairhurst designed an optimised reprofiling design which used the geological conditions to improve stability whilst maintaining the unique aesthetics of the area.  The scheme was subject to consideration by the ODPM (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) prior to approval in 2002, with progress being tied to production requirements and due for completion in 2010.
