LOCATION: Lothian, Scotland
CLENT: FETA
STATUS: Current
The inspection and assessment of the anchorages of the Forth Road Bridge is a unique and challenging project. Fairhurst’s appointment by FETA followed on from the feasibility study undertaken by Fairhurst into the replacement or augmentation of the main cables of the suspended structure.
Securing the main suspension cables the anchorages are a critical element of any suspension bridge and their condition is fundamental to the integrity of the bridge. At the Forth Road Bridge the anchorages consist of post tensioned strands embedded in rock tunnels. The condition of the strands is unknown and there are no direct means of inspection or assessment.
Fairhurst’s brief is to develop testing and inspection methods to establish the current condition and predicting the long term integrity of the anchorages of the bridge.
