Landscape Architecture : M8 Network Improvements

LOCATION: Glasgow, Scotland
CLIENT: Transport Scotland
STATUS: Ongoing

Fairhurst / Mouchel (joint venture) were commissioned to consider and recommend alternative routes and junction strategies for any improvement of the A8 to motorway standard. The Network Improvements project is one of three parts of the Transport Scotland M8 Improvements Scheme, and considers the section of road between Easterhouse to Hamilton along parts of the M8, M73 and M74. Fairhurst’s Landscape Architecture Team prepared the Landscape and Visual Effects Chapter for the Stag Report and DMRB Stage 2 and 3, which assessed these alternatives and recommended a preferred route (DMRB Stage 2) and then assessed this route in further detail (DMRB Stage 3).

The Landscape and Visual Effects Chapter assesses the predicted impacts that the proposed development will have on the surrounding landscape features/ receptors (i.e. landform, vegetation, landscape character, landscape quality etc) and surrounding visual features/ receptors (i.e. residential properties, recreational users, local road users, etc). The significance and residual long term effects of these impacts are then assessed to help inform the decision of a preferred route option and proposed mitigation proposals that will aim to reduce the significance of these effects.

The DMRB Stage 3 assessment and report for the M8 Network Improvements project has been completed and once any potential objections have been resolved the project will move to Detailed Planting Design stage before the work commences and construction begins on site.
