CLIENT: GB Building Solutions
STATUS: Completed 2008
Fairhurst were appointed by GB Building Solutions to carry out hard and soft landscape detailed design for the internal layout of a new biome to accompany a new school building at Cramlington Junior Learning Village.
The biome is part of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) initiative to improve science learning with innovative and inspirational ways to increase engagement, participation and achievement in science. The biome will be one of only 7 exemplars to be developed nationally and will be known as Project Faraday. Cramlington JLV will be one of the first science specialist schools in the country.
The biome layout reflects regular discussions between Fairhurst and the school, encouraging students to explore the space whilst providing communal gathering areas for group work and an amphitheatre for teaching. The planting combines a mix of species within a temperate environment, including examples of plants that provide food, medicines and building products. Raised planting beds of varying heights present the plants at different viewing levels for the students. These beds are retained by a range of materials such as timber, slate and limestone, providing further educational opportunities. Coloured rendered walls add an attractive and creative element within the space.
