Fairhurst was responsible for the design and supervision of a new suspended concrete deck and the installation of fenders on the 335m long Northumbrian Quay (formerly Tyne Commission Quay) to enable large cruise ships such as the QE2 to be accommodated on the River Tyne.
Other vessels which have since used the refurbished quay include the HMS Ark Royal and a number of large cruise ships such as the Eurodam, Saga Rose, and Grand Princess.
The works included the installation of some 270 steel tubular piles and ground anchors at the rear of the deck.
