Commercial Sector : Project Broadside

This project comprises a 200,000 square foot extension to an existing warehouse for retailer T J Morris. Half of the extension is a ‘High Bay’ warehouse 33m tall which incorporates 19 levels of pallet racking, with the pallets handled by automatic cranes running on rails.

The low tolerance of the cranes and racking to settlement of the slab resulted in a pile supported, suspended floor slab being adopted for this part of the building. The remainder of the building is 12m tall and incorporates dock levelers and scissor lifts for transferring goods in and out of the warehouse.

Substantial areas of concrete hardstanding surround the extension, and a 12m tall earth bund has been constructed along one side of the site to provide acoustic and visual shielding for an adjacent residential area. A separate 20,000sq ft Training Centre provides temporary accommodation and a training facility for T J Morris’s staff.
