This project consists of two main structural elements.
Exploratorium: The building's primary function is to act as a large container for exhibition galleries with a curved protective shell roof finished in titanium.
Imax Theatre: The 350 seat Imax Theatre is contained within a titanium shell with offices, a viewing gallery, mezzanine lounge and exhibition foyer wrapped around the front of the theatre on three levels.
A range of comprehensive ground investigation methods were needed to address the difficult ground conditions in the former quay-side and dock. These included cone penetrometer testing and deep boring. Driven bearing pile foundations were designed for the main structures and sheet pile walls.
