Bridging NewcastleGateshead (BNG), together with the other Government Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders commissioned Fairhurst to undertake research into the value of good design and the range of current design guides and standards for residential developments.
Initial analysis involved assessing the relevance of the most pertinent residential design guides, and how these can be used to influence the delivery of design quality.
These findings were then used to inform comprehensive consultation analysing the value placed on design by residents and industry professionals. This consultation surveyed 200 residents from 6 housing schemes in the North East, 200 residents from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds from the North West and a number of housing developers and designers involved in the delivery of residential environments.
The findings from the research are presented in two reports that will be used to focus Pathfinder investment through highlighting which design approaches provide the best ‘value’ from a social, environmental and economic perspective. The final report will offer practical advice on how the Pathfinders can implement and assess residential design quality. They will include an indication of cost considerations, funding options, procurement routes and the design process, providing a comprehensive guide to the delivery of high quality residential environments.
