Urban Design : Fort William's Waterfront

LOCATION: Fort William, Highlands
CLIENT: The Highland Council
STATUS: Masterplans Finalised for Public Consultation

Fairhurst's multi-disciplinary Planning & Development Division has produced indicative masterplans and streetscape proposals for the regeneration of Fort William’s town centre and wider waterfront. Through the primary aim of promoting the physical and economic enhancement of the town, the masterplans are intended to promote links from the town centre to the waterfront, and Fairhurst’s work has included the design and layout of several new public realm areas and a series of recommendations which will ensure increased connectivity, improved public realm and design continuity throughout the town. An important element of the masterplans’ development was to ensure that they respond to, and integrate effectively, with the detailed proposals for the waterfront proposed by the Councils preferred bidders for the waterfront site. As a result, Fairhurst were also tasked with appraising the design quality of the waterfront proposals and providing design principles to guide this development alongside the town centre improvements.
