Water Services : M74 Raith Interchange Water Environment

LOCATION: Central Scotland
CLIENT: Transport Scotland
STATUS: Ongoing
COST: £56m - £61m

The M74 Raith Interchange, at the junction of the A725 and M74, is an integral link in the central Scotland trunk road network.  The proposed improvement project aims to reduce queuing on approach roads at peak periods, allowing traffic on the surrounding road network to move more freely. Transport Scotland awarded the Mouchel Consulting and Fairhurst Joint Venture the commission to develop design solutions for the proposed improvements.  As the junction sits in the floodplain of the River Clyde, and adjacent to a nationally designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, environmental considerations have been integral to the evolution of the design. In terms of the water environment, this has specifically involved:

  • developing drainage provision in line with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and incorporating Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) to ensure effective management of runoff quantity and quality;
  • the inclusion of floodplain attenuation in the scheme to compensate for the loss of existing storage through the increased footprint of the interchange;
  • provision of flood protection measures to ensure the continued effective operation of the junction in extreme flood events in the Clyde.
