Burntisland Coastal Defence

This Network Rail-owned coastal defence, situated to the west of Burntisland, protects a 2.5km stretch of coastline bearing the ECN2 railway and the Fife Coastal Path. Fairhurst assisted AmcoGiffen in delivering a scheme of repairs and enhancements in order to extend the working life of the structures and protect additional areas of eroding shoreline.

Having carried out investigations including detailed condition surveys and wave overtopping studies, Fairhurst designed the repair works and worked with Network Rail to gain the required approvals. The works included the installation of new rock armour, concrete and masonry repairs to the existing revetment, and fall protection handrailing.

This project will help to improve the resilience of the railway against the effects of climate change, rising sea levels and increased frequency of storms.
