Lowood Bridge is a Grade B-listed masonry arch structure that has stood for over 250 years. Lowood Bridge not only serves as a vital transport link for the local area, accommodating approximately 5,000 vehicles daily, but it also holds intrinsic historical and architectural value.
The scope of the refurbishment work addresses various structural deficiencies identified through meticulous inspections. From rebuilding parapet walls to installing steel anchors and conducting scour protection works on the central pier, the project demonstrates a thorough understanding of the bridge’s needs and a commitment to addressing them comprehensively. The work required traditionally trained highly skilled masons and with the assistance of extensive modern scaffolding access techniques. Moreover, removing the 26-tonne weight limit, which had previously restricted heavy vehicle traffic, further enhances the bridge’s functionality and accessibility, benefiting the local economy and community.
