Travelodge Beckton

Discipline: Civil, Structural
Sector: Hotels

Located at the junction of the busy North Circular and A13 arterial roads in East London , this purpose built 133 bed hotel was constructed on former GLA brownfield land using a mix of timber kit construction and traditional composite concrete and steel to form the podium transfer slab.

The site was a former municipal landfill whose plateau sat around 6m above the adjacent road necessitating a complicated retaining wall solution to form the winding access road up to the hotel. Due to the varying landfill quality a piled solution was adopted which were installed without issue. The foundations formed a series of suspended beams to support the timber framing above as well as the feature gabion basket cladding at ground floor level.
