Fairhurst Tackles the Beast Race and Conquers It!
Arnish Point, located 3km southwest of Stornoway, was once occupied by an oil rig fabrication yard. Following its closure, the site was reserved for industrial redevelopment. However, legacy waste, including approximately 1500m³ of shot blast material, remained stored beneath a geosynthetic clay liner under a Waste Management License (WML). Before the land could be used, the waste had to be cleared and the site had to undergo remediation.
Fairhurst was the original designer and had undertaken the original Waste Management License application for this site. Thereafter, Fairhurst undertook annual monitoring to confirm the current status of the site. We also designed the Remediation Strategy to restore the land and clean up the site.
Our team worked with SEPA to ensure compliance with rules and regulations. An extension of the Waste Management license was also granted by SEPA in 2020 to extend to 2025.
To meet this extended deadline, Environmental Reclamation Services (ERS) Ltd was employed by the landowner, Highlands and Islands Enterprise(HIE), to undertake the remediation and removal of stockpiled Shot Blast Waste.
To remove the waste from Arnish Point, a specialist Remediation Contractor stepped in and transported it by cargo ship southwards to Lincolnshire. It was then transported by articulated lorries to reach the receiving waste facility in Peterborough.
From the historic involvement of the site, Fairhurst was ideally placed to assist HIE to obtain the approvals to surrender the Waste Management License following remediation and verification works.

The cleared site is now part of the plans to expand the development. With the Arnish Point project complete, Fairhurst continues to support sustainable redevelopment across Scotland’s industrial landscapes.
