To celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th of March, we connected with our incredible staff across the UK to hear their stories. They shared what ignited their passion for their careers and what #AccelerateAction means to them in driving real change. We’re sharing their inspiring insights!

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering/ this industry, and what keeps you motivated?

I’ve always had a natural curiosity about how things were built and a passion for problem solving. The idea of using my problem solving skills to make a positive impact lead me to pursue a career in civil engineering.

What keeps me motivated is knowing that the work I do contributes to creating safe, efficient and sustainable infrastructure that people rely on every day. Within civil engineering we are often faced with problems and our job is to find the best way to solve or avoid them. Some can be trickier than others but the satisfaction you get once you’ve figured it out and keeping the client happy makes it all worth it.

What does #Accelerate Action mean to you in your role?

#AccelerateAction is about empowering others – especially women – to take action and pursue careers in STEM which is traditionally a male dominated field. In my role this can involve helping to promote and encourage engineering opportunities to younger generations and sharing my own experience in how I got to where I am today in my career.

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering/ this industry, and what keeps you motivated?

I’ve always been fascinated with structures and the mechanics behind them. Entering this industry at just 17, I quickly realised my passion for the practical nature of engineering – seeing calculations and drawings come to life as structures take shape. The sense of fulfilment after successfully completing a project keeps me motivated, as I truly enjoy what I do.

What’s a skill or talent you have outside of engineering that helps you in your job?

Not necessarily a skill or talent but I like to think that I inherited a little creative streak from my father, which helps me develop resourceful solutions to problems encountered.

What does #Accelerate Action mean to you in your role?

It means breaking barriers and supporting diversity in a field that has traditionally been a male dominated industry. It is encouraging to see times changing for the better with more women entering the construction industry now than ever.

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering/ this industry, and what keeps you motivated?

My inspiration to pursue a career in the landscape industry stems from a deep appreciation for nature and the powerful impact that thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces can have on people’s lives. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of blending creativity with functionality, and landscaping offers a unique opportunity to do just that. Whether it’s creating serene garden spaces, designing sustainable landscapes, or enhancing outdoor environments for communities to enjoy, the process of transforming an area into something beautiful and useful is incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, the joy I see in clients when they experience their new outdoor spaces is a powerful motivator, as I know I’ve contributed to something that positively impacts their daily lives and the environment.

What’s a skill or talent you have outside of engineering that helps you in your job?

As a visual arts enthusiast, honing in drama and acting skills along with content creation and media production being my expertise, this specific skill set of media helps me to be detail orientated and have the capability to visually appraise elements.

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering/ this industry, and what keeps you motivated?

As a child, I loved playing The Sims where I could design and build houses and structures. When it came to the time to apply for university, I started researching career options, and the idea of designing the structural elements of houses, apartments, and other buildings excited me. Engineering allows me to contribute to creating spaces that people use daily. The continuous learning and problem-solving aspects of the industry drive me to constantly improve and learn daily, which helps to stay passionate about my work.

What’s a skill or talent you have outside of engineering that helps you in your job?

Outside of engineering a skill/talent that benefits me in my role is my ability to organise, whether it’s setting goals or managing time. This helps me stay on top of tasks and deadlines at work, ensuring that projects stay on track whether it’s keeping a project timeline organised, coordinating with team members, or managing multiple tasks simultaneously.

Happy International Women’s Day!
