We were delighted to welcome local student, Adam, for 10 weeks of work experience at our Sevenoaks Office. With a strong interest in mathematics, Adam has developed a keen interest in engineering and finds the mechanics of the built environment particularly interesting. When searching for work experience opportunities, Adam shared that his goal was to “gain experience in the industry by working for a leading firm alongside highly skilled engineers.”

As his 10-week placement comes to a close, we sat down with him to gain more insights about his learning, growth, reflections, and future plans.

Learnings & Growth

Q: Can you share a project or task you’ve enjoyed working on?

A: I have worked extensively with the structural engineering team on a housing development project, Mockbeggars Farm. Working on this project among others has provided me with valuable experience in the rigorous technical processes required to ensure design compliance prior to issuing construction documentation.

It has also been highly rewarding to contribute meaningfully to a large-scale development and to see how my work supports the successful delivery of a complex construction project.

Q: What new skills have you learned during your time here?

A: I have furthered my proficiency in the use of AutoCAD, as well as learning to model and optimise structural calculations. I also gained a greater understanding of the processes behind issuing projects for construction.

Reflections and Future Plans

Q: Please share any reflections you have on the work experience.

A: My ten weeks at Fairhurst have provided me with valuable insights into the Civil Engineering Industry and the day-to-day life of engineers. I have learned important skills which I can carry forward with me, and enjoyed the experience of working with skilled professionals.

Q: How do you think this experience will help you in your future career?

A: This experience has certainly put me in a better position going forward in my career as it has helped me to develop key skills required in the industry, including analytical and problem-solving skills as well as attention to detail.

“I found my ten-week summer placement at Fairhurst to be an incredibly valuable experience. One of the most rewarding aspects was working closely with senior engineers, who provided valuable insights into the theory and engineering judgement behind design decisions.

Gaining practical experience has broadened my understanding of civil engineering and strengthened my theoretical foundation, which I will carry forward into my third year of university and future career.

I would highly recommend a summer placement at Fairhurst to any student looking to gain meaningful industry experience in a supportive and professional environment.”

We are always delighted to support local students explore their interest in potential careers in the built environment. We wish Adam all the best in continuing his studies and future ambitions!
