The new East Sands student accommodation is a new development at the University of St Andrew’s, Scotland.
Alongside Fairhurst’s Planning team, the Landscape and Urban Design teams provided full site appraisal for this challenging and prominent site which respects the onsite ‘protected open space’ designation and suitably complimented and responded to the existing coastal context and landscape character of the site. In-depth consultation with the Local Planning Authority was completed throughout the pre-application process and design development was heavily influenced by this and the community consultation event which was managed and coordinated by Fairhurst.
Fairhurst’s pragmatic approach and existing knowledge of the local area allowed our Landscape and Urban Design team to establish a practical yet innovative design brief which saw the delivery of an evolving landscape design/ public art within a unique coastal environment which appropriately responded to the challenging site and the many aspirations of all involved parties.
Fairhurst Civil, Structural & Geotechnical engineers designed all elements of the sub-structure and super-structure on this constrained site. This involved the innovative diversion of a major culvert, the introduction of new retaining walls to the site boundary and the design of the timber-framed buildings.
