As World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM) draws to a close this week, we are pleased to present a Q&A with some of our Landscape and Urban Design team. These shed a light on why the profession of Landscape Architecture is so important in the built environment / construction industry, how schemes are realised, what inspires the team and how they found out about the profession.

What are you anticipating to see in the future for landscape architecture?

“Landscape design that is fully integrated with overall site masterplanning from an early stage in project cycles. Landscape architecture acts as a holistic conduit between all disciplines and is the key to delivering nature based solutions that work to repair and enhance ecosystems as well as creating unique, usable spaces for humans. Green and blue infrastructure is key to unlocking a sites potential and making spaces climate resilient.”

What tools do you use to bring design ideas into action?

“Throughout the lifecycle of a project we will utilise a range of skills and softwares to bring design ideas to life. These can range from early hand drawn concept sketches to fullly detailed construction level design information using Computer Aided Design software. Utiising these softwares better helps our Clients visualise our design proposals and helps provide a cohesive and co-ordianted approach with the overall consultant design team.”

Are there any projects that you are inspired by?

“I am inspired by projects like the Fredericks Playground in Southwark, London. It is a space designed with natural play elements, social zones, and inclusive access. The design of the space is not overbearing and fits seamlessly in to the neighborhood – with a pop of orange.”

Why did you choose landscape architecture?

“Landscape architecture sits at an interesting intersection of my interests, particularly that of Geography, History and Design. I was unaware of landscape architecture until by chance my sister mentioned working with a landscape architect. After a bit of research, I jumped at the chance to start my Masters of Landscape Architecture at Newcastle, and to join Fairhurst’s Landscape and Urban Design Team.”
