Adam Stein is a graduate bridge engineer passionate about designing infrastructure that improves everyday life and connects communities.

After completing a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Civil Engineering, Adam chose a practical route into the profession, continuing his education through Fairhurst’s graduate apprenticeship programme rather than attending university as a full-time student. This allowed him to study for a full-time BEng at Heriot-Watt University while developing real industry skills alongside experienced engineers. Balancing academic learning with live project work, he graduated in 2023.

Throughout the apprenticeship, Adam worked on a wide range of bridge projects, from major infrastructure schemes such as the A9 and ASTI Onshore to local bridge works. Building on his earlier experience as a technician, he developed strong skills in analysis, design, and construction support.

Now in a graduate engineer role, Adam applies the theory gained during his degree together with his hands-on experience to assess existing structures and design new bridge solutions, taking on increasing responsibility and solving real engineering problems. He is currently working towards chartered status while continuing to contribute to innovative and impactful projects.

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the tangible impact of the structures I help design, knowing they support communities and create a safer, more connected environment.
