Hagmill Road – Consolidation of Mineworkings

JWH Ross, subsidiary of Fairhurst Group LLP, was commissioned to provide legacy mining consultancy services at the site of proposed industrial development. This began with initial desk based study through mining stability ground investigation and ultimately in the design and monitoring of consolidation works to mitigate against the shallow mining hazards.

Through the initial Coal Mining Risk Assessment process, JWH Ross were able to quickly identify through study of geological and mining records that part of the proposed development site was underlain by shallow workings in the Main Coal of the Scottish Middle coal Measures Formation.

While the assessment unveiled these workings, ground investigation was required to establish the depth and condition of the workings and whether they extend beyond the recorded extent.

The ground investigation refined the ground model from the desk study and established that consolidation works would be required to facilitate the proposed development in the southern part of the site.

JWH Ross then designed a programme of drilling and grouting and tendered the works, with Contractor Soil Engineering appointed to undertake the works. JWH Ross monitored the works, modifying the consolidation plan to account for the ongoing findings and witnessed pressure injection tests to confirm that the works had been completed effectively in line with the specification ahead of the proposed construction works.
