The construction of the new transport hub in North Shields formed the focal point of ambitious plans to regenerate North Shields and transform the town centre into an attractive, family-friendly, destination. The new bus interchange is now linked with the existing Metro station via a high-quality town square and events space. Both the transport hub and infrastructure were delivered with net zero carbon emissions during construction and operation.
Through the provision of our multidisciplinary services, Fairhurst was able to offer a coordinated and cohesive approach from concept design through to construction. In order to minimise the embodied carbon associated with the structure, Fairhurst had early engagement with both the Main Contractor and relevant sub-contractors to develop a lightweight steel frame with a bespoke lattice glulam roof. Fairhurst also undertook a demolition condition survey of the existing structure to identify the structural materials suitable for reclamation and reuse. Ultimately, a 50% reduction in embodied carbon was achieved from Stage 1 baseline proposals to the Stage 5 construction proposals.
