Located on the site of the former Viewforth High School, Fairhurst provided civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental and transportation services to regenerate the former school site overlooking the Firth of Forth in a mix of social and private housing.
The site was bounded along its southern boundary by Network Rail’s East Coast main line which lies in cut below the level of the site. This presented level constraints along the boundary for gardens and the need to satisfy Network Rail’s requirements for construction adjacent to a live railway.
The site had several drainage constraints highlighted by the Drainage Impact Assessment which involved upgrading of the sewerage system off site, together with the requirement for a Waste Water Pumping Station to manage the foul water discharges from a portion of the development due to the lack of a gravity connection suitable to receive wastewater from the entire site.
The client, Whiteburn, and Fairhurst worked seamlessly throughout the project to overcome the particular drainage issues and the awards are no small recognition for all the efforts involved.
