The Newton Nursery redevelopment near Elgin, commissioned by Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS), represents a significant investment in modern forestry infrastructure. At its core, the project involves the construction of a state-of-the-art 12,000m² glasshouse, a critical facility designed to enhance tree production capabilities and support the long-term sustainability of Scotland’s forestry sector. Complementing this are additional essential facilities, including an Operations Centre, a welfare and office hub, cold storage units, and machinery stores. Together, these elements form an integrated infrastructure system that ensures efficient production, storage, and distribution of tree seedlings across Scotland.
The project required integrated advanced civil and structural engineering solutions to create a sustainable and efficient forestry production facility. The project not only enhances Forestry Land Scotland’s ability to produce up to 25 million trees annually but also ensures environmental responsibility through sustainable water management, SuDS implementation, and energy-efficient infrastructure. By combining innovative engineering practices with forestry expertise, the development secures a resilient supply of home-grown timber while supporting Scotland’s wider environmental and economic goals.
